A tapestry takes different colors and cloths, and weaves them together into a beautiful design.  This Iberian Tapestry tour weaves together the sights and cultures of Spain’s and Portugal’s most famous cities (Lisbon and Madrid) into one marvelous vacation. Fans of art and architecture will be delighted by the visits to the famous Prado Museum, which houses 8,000 pieces of Western painting and is one of the world’s most prestigious art museums. From the larger cities to the differing countryside and landscapes, from its world-class art, historical sights, and magnificent cathedrals to its sunny climate and unique cuisine, this trip is a great introduction to the Iberian Peninsula!

  • Madrid: Witness the world’s finest collection of Spanish paintings plus an impressive foreign collection as you tour the Prado Museum with an expert art historian.
  • Lisbon: Visit Jeronimos Monastery with its beautiful Manueline architecture, reflecting Portugal’s trade over the centuries.

Day 1

Today is a long travel day; be as rested as possible before heading for the airport.  Know your itinerary.  If any of your flights are delayed or canceled, contact the airline authorities ASAP.

Walking: light.

Day 2

Our orientation meeting with start at 3 pm at our hotel in Madrid and following that meeting we will venture out to become familiar with our neighborhood and its surroundings.  After dinner, you may choose to take an optional walk to explore Madrid’s major monuments and classy Plaza Mayor, the heart of the city.

Walking: light (moderate, if you join after dinner walk).

Day 3

Today, we will start with a walking tour of the historical center of Madrid.  Next, we will explore the Almudena Cathedral and sumptuously decorated Royal Palace.  The palace has over 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king’s ransom of chandeliers, the Royal Palace is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. Late afternoon and evening are free for personal discoveries and explorations of this great city.

Walking: moderate.

Day 4

This morning we will tour one of Europe’s premier art museums — the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you will see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. Then we’ll visit the Reina Sofía, Spain’s greatest modern art museum, home to Picasso’s Guernica. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid’s most popular park), do a little shopping, and maybe even catch a performance of flamenco.

Walking: strenuous.

Day 5

Free day in  Madrid.  Take an optional bus ride to Spain’s old capital city of Toledo (and go back in time about 500 years).  Enjoy enjoy traffic-free, winding medieval streets of this incredible city. Or choose a day trip to Segovia, famous for its Alcazar Castle the the Roman built aqueduct.  Free evening back in Madrid.

Walking: moderate (and more, if you join after dinner walk).

Day 6

Today we fly to Lisbon, Portugal.  Upon arrival will start our explorations of the city by visiting neighborhoods of Alfama and Baixa.  In the afternoon we will visit the historic São Jorge Castle and from here enjoy majestic views of the city.  We will explore the food district in time for dinner.

Walking: moderate to strenuous, with some hills and stairs.

Day 7

Our day starts with a walking tour of Belém District, home to many of the city’s most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we will learn about Portugal’s golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos.

Walking: moderate to strenuous, with some hills and stairs.

Day 8

We will start with a morning visit the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we’ll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You will have free afternoon and evening to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.

Walking: moderate to strenuous, with some hills and stairs.

Day 9

Today is a free day in Lisbon.  You will have opportunity to travel to Sintra, a longtime royal sanctuary, its forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and palaces. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The hilltop 19th-century Pena National Palace is known for a whimsical design and sweeping views. Return to Lisbon for the last evening.

Day 10

Today is a travel day.  Know your flight itinerary – if any of your flights are delayed or canceled, contact the airline authorities ASAP.
