Day 1

Travel Day

Daily Activity Key:

  • Light: 1-2 miles of mostly level walking
  • Moderate: 3-4 miles walking with some hills/stairs
  • Strenuous: 4+ miles walking with hills, stairs, and uneven terrain

Today is a long travel day; be as rested as possible before you head for the airport. Know your itinerary—if any of your flights are delayed or canceled, contact the airline authorities ASAP.

Day 2

Welcome to Spain

We will begin with an orientation meeting at our hotel in Madrid and following that meeting we will venture out to become familiar with our neighborhood and its surroundings.  After dinner, you may choose to take an optional walk to explore Madrid’s major monuments and classy Plaza Mayor, the heart of the city.

Day 3

Historic Madrid

Today, we will start with a walking tour of the historical center of Madrid.  Next, we will explore the Almudena Cathedral and sumptuously decorated Royal Palace.  The palace has over 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king’s ransom of chandeliers, the Royal Palace is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. Late afternoon and evening are free for personal discoveries and explorations of this great city.

Day 4

Artistic Madrid

This morning we will tour one of Europe’s premier art museums — the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you will see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. Then we’ll visit the Reina Sofía, Spain’s greatest modern art museum, home to Picasso’s Guernica. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid’s most popular park), do a little shopping, and maybe even catch a performance of flamenco.

Day 5

Free Day

Free day in  Madrid.  Take an optional bus ride to Spain’s old capital city of Toledo (and go back in time about 500 years).  Enjoy enjoy traffic-free, winding medieval streets of this incredible city. Or choose a day trip to Segovia, famous for its Alcazar Castle the the Roman built aqueduct.  Free evening back in Madrid.

Day 6

Welcome to Portugal

Today we fly to Lisbon, Portugal.  Upon arrival will start our explorations of the city by visiting neighborhoods of Alfama and Baixa.  In the afternoon we will visit the historic São Jorge Castle and from here enjoy majestic views of the city.  We will explore the food district in time for dinner.

Day 7

Old Town Lisbon

Our day starts with a walking tour of Belém District, home to many of the city’s most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we will learn about Portugal’s golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos.

Day 8

Growing Lisbon

We will start with a morning visit the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we’ll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You will have free afternoon and evening to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.

Day 9

Free Day

Today is a free day in Lisbon.  You will have opportunity to travel to Sintra, a longtime royal sanctuary, its forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and palaces. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The hilltop 19th-century Pena National Palace is known for a whimsical design and sweeping views. Return to Lisbon for the last evening.

Day 10

Travel Day

Today is a travel day.  Know your flight itinerary – if any of your flights are delayed or canceled, contact the airline authorities ASAP.
